Macalester picked up its third straight Metrodome split, beating Concordia University (Wis.) 5-0 in the opener before falling 14-10 in the late game. Just as they did in doubleheader splits with Loras (Ia.) and Minnesota-Morris, the Scots used strong pitching to win game one before coming up short in their bid for a sweep.
The Scots will head to Phoenix for Spring Break next weekend with a 3-4 record on the year. Concordia is 1-1.
After holding Loras hitless through six innings of work in his first start of his season,
James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) surrendered just one hit while striking out six batters in five innings of duty in the first game. Through his first two starts, Macalester's All-MIAC ace has held opponent hitters to a meager .027 average (one hit in 37 at-bats) in 11 innings pitched.
Macalester scored all the runs it needed in the top of the first, getting three runs on RBI doubles by
Joe Borer (Sr., St. Paul, Minn. / Central) and
Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West), and a run-scoring single by
Cody Ching (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) – all coming with two outs. Kent went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Ching collected two hits.
John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) worked the final two innings on mound duty to finish off the one-hitter. Simkins also contributed two hits and two runs.
The Scots also got game two off to a good start, crossing the plate four times on a Ching grand slam deep to left-center field. Simkins also contributed two hits and a pair of runs batted in.
Concordia took over with seven runs in the top of the fifth to go up 9-5 before the Scots re-gained the lead by posting five runs in the bottom of the inning with the help of doubles by Borer and
Nate Wilson-Traisman (So., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene). The Falcons tied the score in the top of the sixth and opened up another lead with fourth seventh-inning runs.
Borer and
Nate Wilson-Traisman each had three hits and two runs scored. Two of Wilson-Traisman's hits were doubles.
Through seven games, Kent and Borer lead Mac with .474 batting averages (both are 9-for-19). Borer owns a .789 slugging percentage and Kent is slugging .684. Simkins is batting .400 and leads the team with 10 hits and nine runs. Mac is hitting .304 through seven games compared to .249 for their opponents. Twenty of the team's 58 hits are doubles, with Kent and Simkins collecting four two-baggers apiece.
The Scots will play eight games March 15-21 in Phoenix. They'll play doubleheaders with Central (Ia.) and Knox (Ill.), and single games with Wisconsin-Stout, Marian (Wis.), Suffolk (Mass.) and Williams (Mass.).
