Big first inning leads to split with UMM

Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

Macalester sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight times in the first inning of the opener, and went on to split a twinbill with Minnesota-Morris at the Metrodome. It was the second straight Metrodome split for the Scots, who went 1-1 earlier in the week against Loras.

The Scots went on to take the first game 14-6, getting four innings of no-hit, no-run relief pitching by Brad Johnson (Jr., Mt. Laurel, N.J. / Lenape). UMM came back to edge Mac 6-5 in the nightcap, stopping Scot threats in the sixth and seventh innings to hold on.

Macalester is now 2-3 on the season. The UMM Cougars are 1-1.

The Cougars started off the night with three runs in the top of the first inning, only to witness Macalester respond with eight runs of its own. Mac's first seven batters reached base to set the stage. Johnson entered the game with his team on top 12-6 in the top of the fourth frame and faced just 14 batters in four innings – just two over the minimum – and fanned three batters.

Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) and Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West) each went 2-for-3, while English, Kent and Nate Wilson-Traisman (So., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) each had doubles.  English also had a sacfrice fly.  Kent, who scored three runs, has three doubles on the young season and leads the team through five games with a .429 batting average (6-for-14).

Mac crossed the plate four times in the top of the third inning of the nightcap to go up 4-0, getting doubles from John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) and Robert Engle (So., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence). However, the Cougars came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth after Mac starter Alex Ingram (Fy., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) cruised through the first three frames easily. Minnesota-Morris then added four more runs in the fifth and put out Macalester threats in the final two innings to hang on for the split.

The Scots make another short trip across the river to the Metrodome on Sunday (March 9) for a 6:30 p.m. doubleheader with Concordia (Wis.).
