Scots and Luther split games at Metrodome

Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

Macalester played to its fourth straight Metrodome split this season late Tuesday night in Minneapolis. Just as they did in their previous three Dome doubleheaders, the Scots won the opener before dropping the nightcap. This time, it was a 5-4 game one victory over Luther (Ia.) and a 10-2 Luther triumph in game two.

The Scots are now 7-10 on the season heading into the MIAC campaign. The Norse are 4-3 on the year.

Luther out-hit Mac 13-5 in the first game, but left 12 runners stranded, compared to just two for the Scots. Robert Engel (So., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) picked up the win with two innings of relief pitching for starter Jack Cooper (Fy., Alexandria, Va. / T.C. Williams), who also pitched well. After starting out 4-0 as a starter, James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his first collegiate save. Murrey lowers his ERA to 0.74 through 24 1/3 innings of duty.

Macalester broke a 2-2 deadlock with three fourth-inning runs, getting the go-ahead run on a two-out RBI single by Will Chen (Fy., Edina, Minn.). The Scots tallied important insurance runs on a big two-run double by Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha), who is now hitting .386 on the campaign. Chen scored two runs and also drew a walk.

Luther yielded just three Mac hits in the nightcap and took control with four runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth.

The Scots are scheduled to open MIAC play Saturday (March 29) at St. John's.
