Macalester vs. Martin Luther statistics
Macalester's comeback bid fell short in New Ulm against Martin Luther College, as the Knights defense had a goal-line stop on fourth down late in the game to come away with a 28-14 win. Martin Luther ran for 261 yards on the day and improves to 5-3 on the season, while the Scots fall to 3-5 with two games remaining.
The day got off to a good start as
Matt Hurni (So., Little Falls, Minn.) recovered a fumble at the MLC 28-yard line. Macalester took advantage of the good field position, getting the final 17 yards on four straight runs by
T. Joe Loiselle (Fy., Chippewa Falls, Wis.), who crossed the goal line from a yard away with 3:29 to go in the first quarter to put the Scots on top.
Loiselle finished with another strong day running the ball, compiling 96 yards on 28 carries to go along with his seventh touchdown of the season. He's run for 822 yards on the season.
Martin Luther responded with three second-quarter scoring drives – the last on a fourth-and-goal pass with less than a minute remaining to take a 21-7 halftime lead.
MLC added a touchdown midway through the third quarter on a third-and-long Aaron Voss 71-yard TD scamper. Voss finished with 149 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
Macalester cut the margin to 28-14 early in the fourth quarter when it went 69 yards on 13 plays, getting the ball in the end zone on an eight-yard
Trevor Miehe (So. Holmen, Wis.) to
Matt Mitchell (So., Chippewa Falls) pass.
The Scots stopped the Knights on downs on MLC's next possession and proceeded to march 70 yards on 15 plays with the hope of getting to within a touchdown. However, the drive stalled on a fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line, thus ending the Scots hopes of a second half comeback.
On the day, Miehe went 16-for-34 with no interceptions for 160 yards.
Jon Elliott (So., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) caught five passes for 43 yards, and
Mike Snavely (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) pulled in four receptions for 43 yards.
Brian Foster (So., Shannon Miss.) was Mac's leading tackler on the day with 12 stops. Four teammates added nine tackles apiece: Hurni,
Zach Hahn (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata),
Ed Fitzpatrick (Sr., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani) and
Josh Boomgaarden (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.).
Macalester plays Friday (Oct. 31) against Minnesota-Morris at the Metrodome in Minneapolis at 12:30 p.m. This event will be part of the
