Macalester vs. St. Thomas statistics
St. Thomas scored in each half and moved a step closer to claiming the conference title, handing the Scots a 2-0 MIAC defeat at Macalester Stadium. The Tommies, who are being chased by Augsburg and Carleton for the championship, improve to an unbeaten 10-0-3 on the season and 7-0-2 in the MIAC. Macalester falls to 8-5 overall and is still in the picture for a spot in the four-team league playoffs at 5-3 in conference play.
Seven teams are at least a couple games over .500 and the race for the four spots will make every upcoming defeat for a playoff contender a painful one.
The Tommies, who have now shut out five of their last six MIAC opponents, controlled much of the play and out-shot Macalester 15-10. Each team, however, had good scoring chances. St. Thomas received a goal by Kirsten Moran at 5:10 to establish an early lead, and put things away when conference scoring leader Erin Sprangers netted her ninth of the fall in the 76th minute.
Before returning to MIAC play, the Scots fly to Los Angeles this weekend to play Occidental on Saturday (Oct. 18) and Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday (Oct. 19). Pomona-Pitzer is coached by former Macalester All-American and all-time scoring leader Jenn Scanlon.
Macalester returns to its MIAC schedule next Wednesday (Oct. 22) with a home match against St. Catherine.
