Mac jumps to 5-2 in the MIAC

Macalester bounced back from its first home field MIAC loss in 15 years by going on the road for a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's in Winona and improving to 5-2 in the conference. The Scots are now 8-4 overall and have sacrificed just one goal in their past six conference games.

The Scots move into fourth place in the league standings by getting goals from Rose Betzler (Jr., Northfield, Minn.), her team-leading fifth of the season , Liz Hormann (Sr., Salem, Ore. / South Salem), and Jenna Machado (Fy., Boulder, Colo. / Fairview). Machado's score was her first career goal at Mac.

Jenny Lee (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) turned away four SMU shots on goal while playing the first 76 minutes in goal and lowered her goals against average to 0.44 in conference play.

The Scots had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and tried seven corner kicks, compared to just one for the Cardinals, who are 4-9-1 overall, 0-9 in the MIAC. The Scots suffered nine off-side calls.

Betzler fifth of the year came just 7:02 into the match. Hormann made it 2-0 in the 19th minute on a Maddie Mette (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) assist and just :56 before the halftime intermission, Emily Bardwell (So., Denver, Colo. / East) assisted on Machado's score.

On Tuesday night (Oct. 14), the Scots play one of their most important matches of the fall when they play host to league-leading St. Thomas at 7:45. The Tommies will come in with an unbeaten 9-0-2 record.
