Three different players scored for the Scots, who also received an “own goal,” as Macalester cruised to a 4-1 win in St. Paul over Saint Mary's for its second straight MIAC victory. The Scots dominated play in the second half and finished the game with a 14-1 shots on goal advantage.
Netting seven goals this week in wins over Concordia and St. Mary's, the Scots boost their record to 8-5-1 overall and get into the thick of the race for the MIAC post-season with a 4-2-1 league mark. Macalester is a strong 7-1-1 at home and has chalked up 12 goals over the past four MIAC matches. St. Mary's drops to 2-11-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the conference.
Ryan Marshall (Fy., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) launched five shots on goal and got the scoring started in the 37th minute on a
Nate Juergens (So., St. Paul, Minn. / Como Park) assist for his third marker of the season, scoring on a left-footer from 15-yards out to the lower left corner from Juergens' cross from the corner.
Andrew Yokom (Sr., Arden Hills, Minn. / Mounds View) got a foot on a
Scott Petesch (Jr., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) free kick from the corner five minutes into the second half for his first career goal at Mac. The Cardinals cut the margin in half in the 63rd minute, but a Macalester own goal as the SMU defender tried to head the ball back to the goalkeeper resulted in a 3-1 lead for the Scots with just over 11 minutes left on the clock.
Jake Rocke (Jr., Lincoln, Neb. / East) put the finishing touches on the triumph with his second goal of the year in the 85th minute, getting a double assist from Petesch and
Jeremy Carp (Fy., Portland, Ore. / Oregon Episcopal School).
The Scots are one of seven teams in the fight for the four-team conference playoffs and are tied for fourth in points with nine. They play their most important match of the season to date Tuesday (Oct. 14) at St. Thomas.
