Hot-shooting Cobbers hand Scots first MIAC defeat

Macalester vs. Concordia stats & play-by-play

Concordia shot 61% from the floor, including 9-for-15 from three-point range, and handed Macalester its first conference defeat with a 90-73 win over the Scots in Moorhead.

Macalester falls out of the MIAC lead, dropping to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, and has its five-game winning streak halted. The Cobbers improve to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in MIAC play.

The Scots were done in by the offensive performances of Concordia's Luke Linz and Erik Lien, who combined to make good on 22-of-30 shots and score 56 points. Linz finished with 30 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists, while Lien chipped in 26 points while going 4-for-4 from behind the arc.

Mac's Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) moved into the No. 2 position on the school's all-time scoring list with a basket with five minutes to go in the first half. That moved him past Patrick Russell '03 (1,540 points). Conboy paced the Scots with 22 points while also grabbing eight of his team's 20 rebounds.

Following his sixth consecutive 20-point performance, Conboy now has 1,554 career points at Mac, second only Ben Van Thorre '04 (1,707 points). He is averaging 25.1 points and 9.7 rebounds through the season's first nine games.

Paul Richie (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Brian Ranwick (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Minnetonka) each went 4-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Ranwick finished with 15 points, while Richie and Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) added 12 points apiece. Woldeslassie dished out seven assists.

The contest was close in the early going before Concordia took the lead for good at 17-15 midway through the first half. The Cobbers led 25-23 with 5:37 to go in the opening half before closing out the period on 13-5 run to go up by 10 points at the intermission, 38-28. Concordia scored the first six points of the second half and Macalester could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Concordia out-scored the Scots 36-12 in points-in-the-paint and 15-7 on second-chance points.

Macalester returns to action Monday (Jan. 7) when it hosts Augsburg at 7:45 at the College of St. Catherine.
