Macalester vs. SMU stats & play-by-play
Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) became Macalester's all-time scoring leader and finished with 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Scots past Saint Mary's 68-65 in Winona. Conboy moved past Ben Van Thorre '04 into the top spot on the school's career scoring chart when he drilled a three-pointer midway through the first half, and now has 1,729 points at Mac.
Kyle Hamblett (Fr., Paris, France / American School) added 17 points and
Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Acaedmy) had 16.
The Scots took the lead for good on a Woldeslassie layup with 9:48 to play and hung on to snap a frustrating eight-game losing slump and move to 6-11 overall, 4-8 in the MIAC. The Cardinals extend their losing streak to eight games and fall to 1-17 on the season, 1-12 in conference play.
Conboy, a two-time All-MIAC choice and the conference scoring leader, was 11-for-21 from the field and for the 17th time in 17 games this season, topped the Scots in rebounding, this time grabbing 14 boards for his seventh consecutive double-double.
Woldeslassie, another Mac all-conference performer, was 7-for-12 from the floor. Hamblett went 8-8 from the free throw line and made the game-clinching foul shots with :07 left.
Lukas Holland led the way for SMU with 21 points. Will Wright, who is second to Conboy in the race for the MIAC scoring crown, had 17 points, while Nick Carr had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Macalester out-rebounded the Cardinals 40-30 and enjoyed a commanding 30-8 advantage in points-in-the-paint.
The Scots host Concordia-Moorhead Saturday (Feb. 2) at the College of St. Catherine.
