Macalester vs. Hamline stats & play-by-play
Four Scots tallied at least 18 points, but host Hamline out-scored their guests 18-11 in the five-minute
overtime period to come away with a 101-94 victory.
The second half was close throughout, with Macalester forcing overtime with clutch free throw shooting. With Hamline leading 83-79 following a layup at 1:51, Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy ) sank two free throws to cut the lead to two points. Kyle Hamblett (Fr., Paris, France / American School) then went 2-for-2 from the line with :09 remaining to send the game into overtime at 83-83.
Hamline was 4-for-6 from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line in the extra session.
The win brings the Pipers to 7-8 on the campaign and 5-5 in the MIAC. Macalester falls to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in the MIAC.
Woldeslassie, who scored a career-best 34 a couple weeks ago against
St. John's , led all scorers with 33 points while also dishing out four assists. Three teammates added 18 points apiece: Hamblett,
Brian Ranwick (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Minnetonka) and
Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka). For Hamblett, it marked a career-best. Ranwick was 4-for-5 on three-pointers.
Conboy, who also pulled down 14 rebounds, now has 1,690 career points – just 18 short of passing Ben Van Thorre '04 (1,707 points) and becoming the school's all-time scoring leader.
Hamline was paced by Eric Clute with 25 points. Four teammates joined him in double figures, while Brandon Hayes distributed 10 assists.Hamline shot 52% for the game and made 19-of-21 free throws. The Pipers also out-rebounded the Scots 49-27.
The Scots host Gustavus on Wednesday (Jan. 23) at the College of St. Catherine at 7:45 p.m.
