Scots Topple UW-River Falls 3-1

Grace King (Jr., Northampton, Mass.) opened the scoring and Rose Betzler (So., Northfield, Minn.) contributed a pair of second half goals as Macalester won is home-opener, a 3-1 decision over Wisconsin-River Falls . Mac is now 1-1 overall going into its MIAC opener and the River Falls Falcons drop to 1-2.

Within a two-minute period, Betzler netted two goals to put the game out of reach. Her first came at 52:18 on a King assist and then at 54:05 she increased her team's lead to 3-0 with an unassisted tally. King also assisted on Betzler's second tally.

Macalester out-shot UWRF 15-8 and owned a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Mac goalkeeper Annie Virnig (Jr., Spokane , Wash. / Lewis & Clark) was called on to make two saves.

The Falcons avoided the shutout on a Megan Church breakaway goal with just :43 left in the game.

Next up for the Scots is the MIAC opener next Tuesday (Sept. 11) at home against Carleton at 7:30 p.m. Carleton handed the Scots defeats in both the regular-season and MIAC playoffs after the Scots had gone 39 game in a row against conference opponents without a loss. Macalester and Carleton were picked first and second, respectively, in the MIAC pre-season coaches' poll.
