Macalester vs. Northwestern stats & play-by-play
Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) sank a pair of free throws with just :01 left in the game as Macalester edged Northwestern College 83-82 in Roseville . Macalester extends its winning streak to five games and claimed its third straight decision in the game's final second.
Returning from a 24-day break since knocking off St. Thomas on Dec. 5th, the Scots improve to 5-3 on the season. Northwestern, which had toppled Macalester in each of the previous three seasons, drops to 6-4.
Northwestern turned a two-point deficit into an 82-81 lead on a Daniel Hanson three-point shot with :08 to play. Following a timeout, Macalester got the ball to its all-conference point guard Woldeslassie, who drove into the lane and was fouled on a blocking offence with only a second to play. He made both free throws.
In the team's previous game against St. Thomas , Woldelassie drove the lane and dished off for the winning score with a second to go. In the game before that against St. Mary's, he drove in for the game-winning layup with just a second to play.
Woldeslassie finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with six assists. He knocked down four three-pointers. Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) added 22 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth straight 20-point performance and fourth double-double of the winter. He is currently ranked eighth in the nation in the NCAA Division III ranks in scoring.
Conboy's career point-scoring total increases to 1,532, moving him past Gerald Dreier (1953-57) (1,529 pts.) and into the No. 3 position on the school's all-time scoring list. The only players ahead of Conboy are Ben Van Thorre '04 (1,707) and Patrick Russell '03 (1,540). Conboy needs nine points to pass Russell.
Colin Keeley (Fr., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson) came off the bench to post a double-double in just 22 minutes of action, finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots while going 4-for-6 from the floor. Seven of his 10 boards came off the offensive glass. Brian Ranwick (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Minnetonka) collected four steals and Jerry Kraus (So., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral (Colo.) finished with eight points and six boards.
Stephen Hanson paced the Eagles with 20 points. Daniel Hanson (15 points / 11 boards) and Mike Anderstrom (12 points / 12 rebounds) posted double-doubles.
At 3-0 and on top of the MIAC standings, the Scots return to league competition next Saturday (Jan. 5) at Concordia-Moorhead.
