October 28, 2025:

Team Update:

The men's and women's team played in their ITA regional tournaments in September and concluded their fall season with an away match against UW-Superior on October 11th. The women's tournament had rain on the first day of the event, which put a damper on the entire tournament as the consolation draws were cancelled and the players competed all over the place. The weather was much better for the men, with a highlight being sophomore Beckett Annes and junior Kangyu Li winning four matches to make the semifinals of the B Draw, ultimately losing to the eventual champions from UW-Steven's Point.

In the UW-Superior match, the women's team battled hard, with seniors Savannah Haugen and Elizabeth Trevathan getting a win at 1 doubles with a score of 6-1. That was the only win for the team, falling in extremely competitive matches at 3 doubles as well as 1, 2, 3, and 4 singles. It was unfortunate that none of the other closer matches went our way, but I was proud of the way the players competed as a team in their first dual match. There was lots of support from the players and their parents, travelling from all over to support the team in their one dual match of the fall!

On the men's side, they lost an extremely close one, losing 3-4 with it coming down to the final match on court. The team lost the doubles point but got a win at two doubles from sophomore Zach Dajani and first-year Derek Chen by the score of 6-1. Senior Jordan Doi returned to the lineup to secure a 6-3, 6-2 win at 1 singles while first-year Charlie Flaman secured his first dual match college win with a 6-3, 6-2 win at 2 singles. Derek Chen continued his winning ways with a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 10-7 comeback win at 4 singles. In the end, with the match tied 3-3, Beckett Annes lost a very close match 5-7, 6-3, 6-10 at 6 singles. I was very impressed with how the team handled themselves in a competitive and pressure filled environment with 5 of the 7 players being underclassmen.

Hall of Fame!

Mike Vidmar '89 (second from left in the picture) was inducted into the Macalester Hall of Fame on October 10th! He was the first ever M Club Male student-athlete of the year in 1989 and was awarded the 1989 MIAC Arthur Ashe Award, given to the tennis student-athlete for excellence in tennis, sportsmanship and community service. In his speech, he mentioned a drill that we might just have to bring back, which included hitting 1,000 volleys in a row while wearing socks!

What's Next - Stay up to Date:

We are now into the offseason! The players will have extra time to focus on their classes while still getting out to hit a few times a week at captains practices. If you want to stay up to date on the team during the offseason, one of the best places to do that is our team Instagram account. On top of posting about match days or academic awards, we also have many player centric posts that will help you get to know the players a little bit better! You can find us at @macalester.tennis

September 9, 2025

The men's and women's teams were back in action starting September 2nd! Dari Streater (Redmond, OR) and Isabella Tamburrino (Memphis, TN) joined seven returning players on the women's team, while Derek Chen (South Kingstown, RI), Charlie Flaman (Calgary, AB, CA), and Ezra Mahoney (Lakeville, MN), joined four returning men's players. The first-years have fit seamlessly into the teams so far, bringing lots of energy and a hunger to show their skills! The returners have shown great leadership, helping to teach the new players drills, doubles strategy, and what it takes to be a collegiate tennis player. Overall, the teams have enjoyed being back on campus together and getting the opportunity to begin working towards achieving their season goals!

Coaching Update:

Chase Johnson was named as the Head Men's and Women's coach in June after serving as the Interim coach since January. His prior coaching experience includes being an assistant coach for Gustavus Adolphus College, where he earned the ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2022. He will continue to build on a culture that focuses on players competing hard with a high level of sportsmanship, developing as players and people, and building each other up through positivity and support.

Joining him as an assistant coach this year is Johanna Brower. Johanna is from Sioux Falls, SD and played collegiate tennis at St. Cloud State University, graduating this past May. She will bring a technical side to the coaching staff as well as new doubles strategies.

Men's Tennis:
All-Conference - Alec Sargent (singles and doubles), Liam Lynch (doubles), and Lucas Wood (singles) were awarded MIAC All-Conference for their on court success during the season. Sargent and Lynch teamed up to go 5-4 at the #1 doubles position, finishing the season on a three match win streak. In singles, Sargent went 4-5 at the #1 position and Wood went 4-5 at the #2 position.

After earning MIAC All-Conference in singles his first two years and All-Conference honorable mention last year, Sargent returned to the All-MIAC team his senior season. Wood received MIAC All-Conference honorable mention in singles his sophomore season, so this year marked his first time receiving All-Conference recognition. Sargent was also an All-Conference member his first two seasons, so this year marked his return back on the All-Conference team. Lynch, a senior, received his first All-Conference award this year.

Academic Success - There were four student-athletes that received Academic All-District honors - Kanyu Li, Owen Lindstrom, Lucas Wood, and Liam Lynch. The Academic All-District Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance in the classroom and on the court, so it is quite an honor to have half of our team receive this prestigious academic award!

Incoming Recruits - There will be four first years joining the team next year as well as one familiar face. Jordan Doi will be back for his senior season next year and will be joined by first years Joseph Cavanagh (Providence, RI), Derek Chen (Bradenton, FL), Charles Flaman (Calgary, Canada), and Ezra Mahoney (Lakeville, MN).

Departing Seniors - Maxwell Davis, Owen Lindstrom, Liam Lynch, Alec Sargent, and Lucas Wood were our graduates this year. They all brought leadership in their own unique way and pushed the program forward together. We are incredibly proud of what they've done as athletes but also who they've grown into as people.

Women's Tennis:
All-Conference - Savannah Haugen was awarded All-MIAC for singles after compiling a 6-4 overall record in conference play, going 5-2 at the #2 position and 1-2 at the #1 position. Haugen makes her first appearance on the MIAC All-Conference team after receiving All-Conference honorable mention the past two seasons.

Academic Success - The team had the highest GPA among all Macalester varsity athletic teams with an overall GPA of 3.84! They also had two student-athletes receive Academic All-District honors, Megan Twomey and Elizabeth Trevathan. A team GPA of 3.84 plus a couple All-District honorees was an incredible accomplishment for

Incoming Recruits - There will be two first years joining the team next year - Isabella Tamburrino (Memphis, TN) and Dari Streater (Redmond, OR)! They will be replacing two seniors, keeping the team at nine players.

Departing Seniors - Megan Twomey and Camellia Schwartzman are our two graduates this year. They were great teammates and mentors who helped guide and support the younger players on the team. They led by example on and off the court with their positivity and resilience. We will miss them greatly and know they will go on to do great things in their bright futures ahead!

March 26, 2025

Dear Macalester Tennis family,

My name is Chase Johnson, and I am the interim head coach this spring with the hope of staying on the job long-term. I am writing to you now from Hilton Head, SC, where our teams are enjoying the opportunity to play some different competition and get over to the beach as part of our spring break trip. Earlier today, the women's team secured a 4-3 win over Indiana University SE and both teams headed out for our team dinner!

It has been awesome to be at Macalester and get the opportunity to work with the players. I've been incredibly impressed by their passion, dedication, and work ethic. Their enthusiasm towards representing Macalester on and off the court has been amazing and I'm very happy to be able to join a program where the players already hold such high values.

As I begin my coaching journey at Macalester, fundraising becomes an important part of getting the teams to the level that I want to reach. The immediate needs would be to have more practice time at Baseline Tennis Center, as well as having the ability to travel further away to play better teams. Both of these are essential for our teams to be as good as they can be at the end of the season. This can only be possible if we reach our fundraising goal of $7,500.

That is why I am reaching out to you. April 2–4 are Give to Macalester Days and every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a positive impact in our student-athletes' experience. Your generosity will make a direct impact on the student-athlete's ability to develop as players, compete at a high level, and create lifelong memories with their teammates.

I also want to share some exciting updates from our program:

Women's Highlights:

The first win of the spring season came in exciting fashion, as it came down to the final singles match of the day. After dropping the doubles point, the team rebounded with wins at 1 and 2 singles before senior Megan Twomey (Minneapolis, MN) brought the team within striking distance of a win after her excellent 6-4, 6-4 win at 3 singles. With the team score tied 3-3, the final match on court was 6 singles. After winning the first set 6-4, freshman Mary Jacobson (Grinnell, IA) came through in the clutch to win the second set 7-5, giving the Scots the win!

Juniors Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, MN) and Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, MN) both started the season off strong, winning their first four singles matches at 1 and 2 singles, respectively, and pairing up as the 1 doubles team to win their first four matches as well, dating back to the win over Concordia (MN) in the fall. After teaming up with Savannah to win 6-2 at one doubles against Northwestern (MN) and winning 6-0, 6-0 at 1 singles, Elizabeth was awarded the MIAC Athlete of the Week!

Men's Highlights:

After taking out UW-Superior the previous week, the team took out another UW school, this time beating UW-Stevens Point 4-3. After splitting one and two doubles, the doubles point came down to third doubles. After holding to 5-5, sophomore Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China) and first-year Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, CA) finally got a break to lead 6-5. They played aggressive tennis to hold the last game and win the doubles point. Senior Lucas Wood (Urbana, IL) and Michael Li won at 2 and 4 singles, respectively, to give the Scots three wins. It all came down to Beckett Annes at 6 singles with the match tied 3-3, and after splitting sets, he came through with a 10-7 victory in the 10-point tiebreak to clinch it for the team!

In their second match on spring break, the boys took on College of Wooster. Michael Li and Beckett Annes won at 3 doubles just before Lucas Wood and Senior Owen Lindstrom (Hanover, MN) secured the doubles point. In singles, senior Liam Lynch (St. Paul, MN) gave the team their second point after winning 10-8 in the 10-point tiebreaker. Owen Lindstrom got the Scots their third win after saving three match points in the 10-point tiebreaker and winning 13-11. With the team score tied 3-3 with one match on, Michael Li was the hero this time. After dropping the first set 3-6 and breaking the strings in both of his rackets, he fought hard with Liam Lynch's racket to take the second set 6-4. In the 10-point tiebreaker, he ran away with it, winning 10-2!

More on the Coaching Change:

After Ted Lauer resigned in December, I was hired as the interim head coach to lead both of the programs this spring. I played tennis at Gustavus Adolphus College, where I was an All-American and Academic All-American my senior year. I also received the 2019 ITA Central Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. I stayed at Gustavus post-graduation in 2019 as a graduate assistant coach for the men's team until 2022, where I earned the ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolade in 2022. This is where my love for coaching the sport of tennis began and I could not be more happy to continue my coaching journey at Macalester.

Haley Haakenstad rejoined the program this spring after taking the fall semester off. I was thrilled when Hayley told me she would be able to coach again this season, as she has the exact leadership skills and tennis mindset that makes for an excellent coach. Hayley and I first got to know each other when we were thrown together as last minute partners in the 2022 Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Tournament. After the tournament, we continued to stay in touch and are excited to be reunited again as a team in a coaching capacity!

I want every student-athlete to be able to reach their full potential as players and people at Macalester, and your donations will play a large role in making that happen. Please mark your calendars for April 2–4 and consider donating to make that possible. With your help, we can ensure our teams continue to grow and succeed!

Best,

Chase Johnson

Fall:
The teams started their season by practicing for a few weeks in September before heading down to Gustavus to compete in the ITA Regional tournament. They concluded their fall season by playing a doubleheader against conference opponent Concordia (Morehead). The women started the season off well with an exciting 5-4 win, with Freshman Mary Jacobson recording her first collegiate dual match win at #5 singles. The men won by a score of 6-3, with Freshman Beckett Annes securing his first dual match victory by winning at #3 doubles. Both teams entered the offseason with a 1-0 conference record.

Offseason:
In the offseason, the team made a coaching change, as Ted Lauer resigned in December, and Chase Johnson started on January 21st as the Interim Head Coach of both the men's and women's teams. Hayley Haakenstad rejoined the program as an assistant coach after not coaching in the Fall.

Spring:
The team started their Spring season last Monday, January 27th. They had their first matches this past Saturday, February 1st, against UW-Superior. The women's team fell short, losing 2-5, but got wins at the top two singles positions by juniors Elizabeth Trevathan and Savannah Haugen. The men's team won a thrilling match 4-3, with senior Alec Sargent clinching the win for the team. Alec had lost to that player the last two seasons and the team had lost to UW-Superior the last two seasons as well, so Alec not only got revenge for himself but for his team as well. Coming up next, the men's and women's teams will compete against UW-Stevens Point on February 8th.

Thanks,
Chase Johnson

Dear MAC Tennis Community,

At MAC, as the fall colors emerged, we enjoyed a successful season on the tennis court. For each team, the fall season culminated with official MIAC matches against Concordia College on Sunday, October 6th 2024. We played on campus and went into the off-season with two wins.

The women began the day winning 5-4. Junior captains, Elizabeth Trevathan & Savannah Haugen, led our group by combining for 3 points at the top of the lineups. After dropping a tight doubles match, Megan Twomey (Sr.) & Mary Jacobson (Fy.), each bounced back in singles to notch our 4th & 5th points; Jacoboson earning her 1st career dual match win.

The men followed and picked up a nice 6-3 victory. In doubles, Senior captains Owen Lindstrom & Lucas Wood, picked up a pivotal 2nd point for the Scots. Each would go on to win in singles afterwards. First year, Teo Corriente Preto, was impressive while collecting his 1st collegiate points with wins in both doubles and singles.

In the meantime, we'll look to enjoy the upcoming holiday season with our families. At this point, our goal is to return everyone to campus safe, healthy, and prepared for 2025. Please, feel free to reach out if you would like to connect or have any questions.

Sincerely,
Ted Lauer
