ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team began its MIAC schedule with a 5-4 victory over Concordia College Sunday afternoon at Hayden Tennis Courts. The dual is the first of the 2024-25 season for the Scots, while the Cobbers are now 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC.
Concordia opened the dual by winning two out of the three doubles matches, taking the matches at second and third doubles. Macalester's No. 1 duo of juniors
Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and
Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) defeated Emma Farder and Anna Hacker, 8-3 for the Scots' lone point in doubles play.
Trevathan and Haugen were both victorious in straight sets in their singles matches at first and second singles, respectively. Concordia won at fourth and sixth singles, meaning the dual would be decided at third and fifth singles. At No. 5 singles, first year
Mary Jacobson (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell-Newburg) battled Isabelle Smith and won the first set, 6-4, lost the second set, 6-1, then won the third, 10-6. Senior
Megan Twomey (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) outlasted Ava Lowman at No. 3 singles, needing a tie-breaker in the second set before winning the third, 10-8. The narrow victory clinched the dual for Macalester.
The Scots will resume their schedule in the spring.
