SARTELL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team earned its second straight MIAC win in as many days with a 5-2 victory over Saint John's University Thursday afternoon at Sta-Fit. The Scots, who beat Hamline by the same score of 5-2 yesterday, are now 10-9 overall and 4-4 in the MIAC. The Johnnies drop to 2-10, 1-6 MIAC.
In doubles, Macalester earned wins at the top two positions to earn the doubles points. Senior
Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) and first year
Charles Flaman (Calgary, Alberta/Rundle College) defeated Alex Draeger and Cole Haabala, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, and junior
Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) and
Zach Dajani (Singapore/Singapore American School) won their match at No. 2 doubles against Andrew Eckmann and Nam Tran, 6-2.
In singles, Doi and Flaman were victorious at first and second singles in straight sets to put the Scots on the edge of winning the dual. Saint John's won the next two matches at fourth and fifth singles to make the score 3-2. Li came through with the clinching point, beating Tran, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) outlasted Jack Gangl in a tie-breaker at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (14-12), while first year
Ezra Mahoney (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) narrowly lost his match against Andrew Eckmann in a tie-breaker, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 5 singles.
Macalester closes out the regular season with a MIAC dual at St. Scholastica on Sunday, April 26. The first matches begin at 3:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
