Men’s Tennis: Scots Battle Back to Beat Hamline, 5-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After dropping the doubles point, the Macalester College men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches to defeat Hamline University, 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Tennis Courts. The Scots improve to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC, while the Pipers fall to 4-13, 1-6 MIAC.

In doubles play, Macalester's No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Zach Dajani (Singapore/Singapore American School) won their match against Samuel Siegel and Wesley Saunders, 6-2. But Hamline was able to win the other two doubles matches to take the doubles point. Wyatt Crowell and Brendon Sebring outlasted senior Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) and first year Charles Flaman (Calgary, Alberta/Rundle College), 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Doi, Flaman and junior Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) won their matches in straight sets at first, second and third singles, respectively to build a 3-1 advantage. At No. 6 singles, first year Ezra Mahoney (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) battled Jonah Wendt in a tie-breaker set and clinched the dual for the Scots with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory. Sophomore Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) forced a tie-breaker in his match with Liam Smith at No. 5 singles, winning the second set and taking the tie-breaker to win, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5). Dajani fell to Max Gulliford at No 4 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).

Next up for Macalester is a MIAC dual against Saint John's University on Thursday, April 23. The dual was originally scheduled to be played at Macalester but will be played indoors in the St. Cloud area.
