Water Polo: Macalester Downs Redlands in OT, Splits on Final Day in California

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Macalester College water polo team ended its five-match trip to California with a thrilling 7-6 overtime victory over Redlands and a 19-3 loss to Division I Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. The results give the Scots a record of 8-5 overall, including a 3-2 mark in California.

Macalester trailed 3-0 to Redlands in the second quarter before first year Alice Lemmon (Evanston, Ill/Evanston Township) put the Scots on the scoreboard with a goal midway through the quarter. Senior Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) talied a goal on a penalty shot a minute later, as Macalester trailed 3-2 at halftime. Midway through the third quarter, Lemmon scored again to tie the match at 3-3, only to have the Bulldogs regain the lead a minute later.

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, a Redlands goal had the Bulldogs on the verge of winning the match with a 5-3 advantage. With 1:11 remaining, Palmer-Sammons notched a clutch goal to bring the Scots to within one, then first year Reese Winegar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) tied the score at 5-5 with a goal with just 13 seconds remaining.

In the first overtime, Palmer-Sammons scored on a penalty shot to give Macalester its first lead of the match. The Bulldogs found the net to knot the score at 6-6, sending the match to sudden death overtime. Two second into the period, Palmer-Sammons notched her fourth goal of the game with a penalty-shot goal to give the Scots the victory.

Against Fullerton, Macalester trailed 4-0 before Palmer-Sammons put the Scots on the scoreboard with a goal late in the first quarter. Fullerton tallied seven goals in the second quarter and five more in the third before senior Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) ended the streak with a goal to start the fourth quarter. Lemmon also found the net in the fourth quarter. Senior goalkeeper Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) and sophomore goalkeeper Myles Kratz (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) each made four saves.

Macalester travels to Washington, Pa., for the final four CWPA matches on March 28-29. The Scots face Penn State Behrend on Saturday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
