ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Scots returned to the Riley Pool for day two of the Macalester Invitational where they dropped their first contest against Virginia Military Institute 13-12, and fell to Augustana College 13-6 in the second game. Macalester moves to 2-2 on the season as they prepare to enter conference play.
In the first game, the Scots wasted no time and scored on their first two possessions, with sophomore
Anna Gaisser (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) and senior
Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) each finding the back of the net. VMI was able to get on the board, but quickly the Scots came back with two more goals of their own, with senior
Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) and junior
Hannah Fasi (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School) getting in on the action to give Mac a 4-1 advantage. The Kangaroos would start to settle in and scored three unanswered goals to send both teams to the second period tied up. In a low scoring second period, the Scots were able to score two more, with Palmer-Sammons finding the back of the net again, and first-year
Katie Martin (Bryn Athyn, Pa./Germantown Academy) chipping in a goal of her own. VMI would match Macalester's two goals to end the half still tied 6-6. The third period kicked off with both teams trading goals, before the Kangaroos were able to jump out to a 9-8 lead heading into the final period of play. VMI came out with two goals to cushion their lead and fend off the Scots, and while Macalester fought until the final whistle bringing the game back to within one, fell short of the comeback resulting in a 13-12 defeat. Gaisser and Palmer-Sammons led the Scots with three goals apiece, with Fasi trickling in two. Strauss, Martin, Senior
Lorelei Bell (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) and first-year
Alice Lemmon (Evanston,Ill./Evanston Township) all each scored one goal while senior goalkeeper
Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) tallied four saves in the loss.
In game two, first-year
Reese Winegar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) got the Scots on the board on their first possession. Augustana quickly responded with one of their own before Palmer-Sammons came back down and gave the Scots back the lead. The squads went back and forth playing some strong defense until the Vikings were able to score again and enter the second period tied 2-2. Augustana keyed on the Scots in the second period, holding them to just one goal while they were able to net five and head into halftime with a 7-3 advantage. Coming out of the half, the Scots showed signs of life after Palmer-Sammons delivered a quick goal to bring the Scots to within three, but that's as close as they would get as the Vikings continued to score and ended the period with a 10-5 lead. Augustana kept their foot on the gas in the final period, scoring three more while Gaisser was only able to muster one for Macalester, causing them to drop the contest. Palmer-Sammons finished with two goals, while Winegar, Martin, Gaisser, and first-year
Mak Kratz (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) each contributed a goal. Kratt and first-year
Myles Kratz (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) logged 1 and 2 saves, respectively.
