ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College seniors
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), and sophomores
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente),
Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford) and
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) were named to the Division III Academic All-District team for softball, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced today. Futchko and Nicholson are making their third appearances on the Academic All-District team.
The CSC Academic All-America program honors student-athletes for excellence in both academics and athletics. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and play in 90 percent or start 66 percent of the team's games to be considered for Academic All-District and All-American accolades. Pitchers must have appeared in 17 games or pitched 25 innings.
Futchko earned her fourth All-MIAC honor this season after batting .368 with 46 hits, 34 runs, 14 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 29 runs batted in to rank among the MIAC leaders in each category. In 159 career games, Futchko registered 167 hits, 116 runs, 39 doubles, eight triples, five homers, 34 stolen bases and 75 RBIs while batting .355. Her 116 runs are one shy of the school record. Also a two-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Futchko majored in biology at Macalester.
A three-time All-MIAC honoree, Nicholson was named to the NFCA All-Region third team after batting .398 with 47 hits and 34 runs to rank sixth in the MIAC in batting average and fourth in runs. She also stole 19 bases in 23 attempts, giving her 51 stolen bases in her career to rank third all-time at Macalester. Nicholson finishes her 155-game career with 174 hits, 109 runs and a .386 batting average, ranking third all-time at Macalester in hits and runs, and fifth in average. A chemistry major, Nicholson also made the Academic All-MIAC team twice.
Also an All-Region selection this spring, Bojorquez was effective in the circle and at the plate for the Scots, ranking fourth in the MIAC with 35 runs batted in while posting the seventh-lowest earned run average (2.54) in the conference. Bojorquez went 10-5 while starting 13 games, striking out 60 batters while walking 26 in 91 innings this season. At the plate, Bojorquez batted .328 with 40 hits, 17 runs, 10 doubles and two homers along with 35 RBIs. She is majoring in biology.
Miller made an immediate impact in her first year as a Scot. In a team-leading 23 appearances, including 21 starts, she went 12-7 with an ERA of 3.09 to rank fifth in the MIAC in wins and 12th in ERA. In 99 2/3 innings, Miller struck out 74 batters, seventh-best in the MIAC, while walking 34. Opposing batters hit .230 against her, the third-lowest batting average allowed among MIAC pitchers. The highlight of her season was tossing a perfect game with eight strikeouts in a 5-inning, 9-0 victory over St. Scholastica on May 3. Miller is an economics major.
Welch had a solid season this spring, batting .288 with 34 hits, 22 runs and 17 RBIs while starting all 42 games at first base. An All-MIAC selection in 2024, she has 86 hits, 41 runs, 45 RBIs and a .344 batting average in 81 career games. Welch is a chemistry major at Macalester.
Macalester, coached by
Jody Gabriel, had four All-MIAC honorees for the first time in the program's history after going 27-15 this spring to set a school record for wins in a season. The Scots also won a game in the MIAC Playoffs and advanced to the semifinals for the first time.
