Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and sophomore
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) were chosen to the Division III All-Region IX third team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the organization announced today.
Nicholson had another outstanding season as the Scots' centerfielder, batting .398 with 47 hits and 34 runs to rank sixth in the MIAC in batting average and fourth in runs. She also stole 19 bases in 23 attempts, giving her 51 stolen bases in her career to rank third all-time at Macalester. In her final regular-season doubleheader, Nicholson went 4-for-7 with two runs in a sweep on St. Scholastica on May 3. She also had a pair of hits in her final game as a Scot in a loss to Saint Mary's in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs. Nicholson finishes her career with 174 hits and 109 runs, ranking third all-time at Macalester in both categories.
Bojorquez was effective in the circle and at the plate for the Scots this season, ranking fourth in the MIAC with 35 runs batted in while posting the seventh-lowest earned run average (2.54) in the conference. Bojorquez went 10-5 while starting 13 games, striking out 60 batters while walking 26 in 91 innings this season. She also pitched three shutouts, including 7-inning shutouts against Carleton and Gustavus. At the plate, Bojorquez batted .328 with 40 hits, 17 runs, 10 doubles and two homers along with 35 RBIs. In an 8-inning win over St. Olaf on April 27, she delivered a walk-off single that scored the game-winning run and clinched a spot in the MIAC Playoffs.
Macalester, coached by
Jody Gabriel, went 27-15 this spring, setting the program record for wins in a season. The Scots qualified for the MIAC Playoffs after finishing fourth in the league standings with a 13-9 conference record.
