KENOSHA, Wis. – The Macalester College water polo team visited the Koenitzer Aquatic Center today for their last non-conference game before CWPA play begins in March. In the evening duel against Carthage, the Scots prevailed 10-7. Macalester moves to 3-2 on the season, while the Firebirds drop to 2-13.
After both teams went scoreless for the first 4:30, the Scots broke the seal with a goal from junior Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood). Senior Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) dropped in the next. Though the Firebirds notched their first goal shortly after, first year Anna Gaisser (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) closed the quarter with a buzzer-beater to give Macalester the 3-1 advantage to end the opening frame.
Though the Scots allowed Carthage to tie the game in the second quarter, they closed the door in the second half. Nadolski notched another goal in each of the remaining quarters to bring her total to three scores on the evening. Though the Firebirds pulled within two points with just over two minutes to play, they missed their final two shot attempts, and junior Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) sank the dagger with 38 seconds remaining.
Gaisser and senior Kendall Coney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) each tallied two goals of their own on the game, in addition to Nadolski's hat trick.
The Scots will face the Firebirds again on March 15 in Sherman, Texas for their first game of conference play, hosted by Austin College. The match will commence at 11:20 a.m.
