DUNDAS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team played a pair of games at the Dundas Dome on Friday, losing to UW-Superior, 11-2 and beating North Central University, 13-0. The results give the Scots a 3-1 record on the season.
In the first game, UW-Superior struck for six runs in the first inning, scored two more in the second and added another in the fourth for a 9-0 lead. Macalester broke through in the bottom of the fourth, when sophomore
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) came home from third on a grounder by sophomore
Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest). Then in the fifth, Bojorquez plated first year
Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) with a grounder to make the score 9-2. The Yellowjackets were able to score a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, then retire the Scots in the bottom of the inning to clinch the win, 11-2. Butler went 2-for-3 at the plate for Macalester.
Against North Central, the Scots' bats woke up in a big way with 13 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) belted two triples and had four runs batted in in the inning, with sophomores
Rebecca Heinze (Rosemount, Minn./Prescott) and
Paige Schultz (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) also delivering two hits apiece. The Macalester pitchers did the rest, as Schultz, junior
Kara Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and junior
Maddie Molay (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) combined to toss a two-hit shutout.
Futchko went 3-for-3 with two runs, four RBIs and a pair of triples. Heinze also had three hits while driving in three runs, with Schultz finishing with two hits and two RBIs.
Macalester plays two more games inside before heading south for Spring Break. The Scots face Luther College and UW-La Crosse at the Rochester Dome on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in Rochester, Minn.
