ST. PAUL, Minn. – Three players tallied at least 10 kills each, as the Macalester College volleyball team defeated Carleton College in four sets, 25-20, 18-25, 25-13, 25-22 in a MIAC match Friday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 4-19 overall and 1-8 in conference play, while the Knights drop to 4-19, 2-7 MIAC.
In the first set, the teams were tied at 18-18 before Macalester used two kills by junior middle blocker Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) to spark a 7-2 run that closed out the set, 25-20. Sophomore outside hitter Adonia Anene (North Hollywood, Calif/The Buckley School) had a team-best five kills in the set. Carleton tied up the match with a 25-18 win in the second set despite three kills apiece from Anene and senior right side Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe West).
The third set was all Scots, with 16 kills and a .289 hitting percentage en route to a 25-13 victory. Senior outside hitter Grace Watkins (San Angelo, Texas/Georgetown) notched five kills in the set. Carleton rebounded in the fourth set and built an early 8-2 advantage. But Macalester quickly got back into the game with a 9-2 run to lead 11-10. The score remained tight, with the lead changing hands again. The score was tied at 19-19 when two kills by Rahe and two blocks by Stratton helped to push the Scots closer, 23-22. Anene sealed the win with back-to-back kills to give Macalester its first MIAC win of the season.
Anene led the Scots with 14 kills to go with 10 digs, while Rahe contributed 12 kills and two blocks. Stratton tallied 10 kills, a .400 hitting percentage and two blocks, with Watkins finishing with seven kills. Junior setter Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) racked up 34 assists and a team-high 27 digs, with sophomore Elizabeth Joo (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) recording 24 digs. First year middle blocker Danielle Oji (Katy, Texas/Obra D. Tompkins) had a solid night with six kills and four blocks. Sylvia Dixon paced Carleton with 12 kills and 11 digs.
Macalester hosts No. 22 Gustavus in another MIAC match on Saturday, Nov. 1. The match starts at 5:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
