DE PERE, Wis. – The Macalester College volleyball team played the first of three matches at the St. Norbert Tournament and swept Northland College, 25-7, 25-9, 25-16 Friday night at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Complex. The Scots are now 2-1 on the season, while the LumberJills fall to 0-5.
Macalester registered 40 kills for the match and had just five attack errors in 89 attempts for a season-high .393 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker
Grace Galer (Hanover Park, Ill./Schaumburg) had three kills in the first set to lead the Scots to a 25-7 win. The second set was more of the same, with Macalester winning 25-9 buoyed by three kills from senior outside hitter
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie). In the third set, the Scots used a 10-3 run to turn a two-point lead into a nine-point bulge, 19-10 en route to a 25-16 victory. Senior right side
Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen) paced Macalester in the third set with four of the team's 16 kills.
The Scots were almost as dominant defensively, holding Northland to 16 kills for the match and a -.062 hitting percentage. Senior libero
Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) led the way with 12 digs, with first year outside hitter
Ella Cohen-Richie (Chicago, Ill./Univ. of Chicago Laboratory Schools) adding 11 digs. Wooten and sophomore middle blocker
Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) each had three blocks. Offensively, Cohen-Richie led the Scots in kills for the third consecutive match with seven. Wooten had six kills, while Stratton and Preston each added five kills. Senior setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) and first year setter
Camilia Jones (Orlando, Fla.) engineered the attack with 17 and 10 assists, respectively.
Macalester continues play at the St. Norbert Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7 with matches against the host Green Knights at 10:00 a.m. and Dominican University at 3:00 p.m.
