DE PERE, Wis. – The Macalester College volleyball team completed play at the St. Norbert Tournament on Saturday with victories over St. Norbert and Dominican University at the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Complex. Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The morning match against the host Green Knights was competitive throughout, with Macalester taking three hard-fought sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22. In the final set the Scots trailed 22-21 before tallying four straight points on an attack error, kills by senior middle blocker
Grace Galer (Hanover Park, Ill./Schaumburg) and junior right side
Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe), and a service ace by senior setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) to close out the win.
Galer led Macalester with a career-best seven kills, with sophomore middle blocker
Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) and first year outside hitter
Ella Cohen-Richie (Chicago, Ill./Univ. of Chicago Laboratory Schools) adding six kills apiece. Norton and sophomore
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) split the setting duties and recorded 10 and 15 assists, respectively. As a team the Scots registered 11.0 team blocks, with Stratton tallying a solo block and six block assists. Williams notched 17 digs, Cohen-Richie had 12 digs, Morrow added 11 digs and junior defensive specialist
Sarah Bohrer (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) had 10 digs.
Against Dominican, Macalester stayed in control of the match in winning, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19. The Scots hit .258 with 38 kills for the match while holding the Stars to a .127 hitting percentage. Rahe delivered a team-high eight kills without an error in 18 attempts (.444), with Galer recording seven kills for the second straight match with one error in 15 attempts (.400). First year setter
Camilia Jones (Orlando, Fla.) dished out 18 assists, with Norton adding 14 assists. Williams paced the defense with 18 digs, while Cohen-Richie contributed 12 digs in the win. Williams averaged 5.22 digs per set over the three matches this weekend to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
The Scots return home to host the six-team Macalester Invitational this weekend, Sept. 13-14. Macalester will face Lewis & Clark and Grinnell on Friday before taking on Minn. Morris and UW-Superior on Saturday.
