KENOSHA, Wis. – The Macalester College water polo team earned a 13-6 victory in a non-conference match at Carthage College Friday night at Koenitzer Aquatic Center. The Scots improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Firebirds drop to 1-6.
Macalester took control early with four straight goals, including two from sophomore
Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay), in the first quarter. Sophomore
Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and first year
Pooja Bucklin (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) also had goals in the quarter. After Carthage tallied a goal with one second left in the first quarter, junior
Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) answered early in the second quarter for a 5-1 lead. Later in the quarter, Nadolski and Matlin tallied back-to-back goals, then
Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) scored twice before the end of the quarter to make the halftime score 9-1 Scots.
In the third quarter, Bucklin scored twice and Palmer-Sammons registered her third goal of the game, as Macalester took a 12-3 lead into the final quarter. Strauss scored the Scots' final goal midway through the fourth quarter as Macalester closed out the 13-6 win. Senior goalkeeper
Laurel O'Hare (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) registered 11 saves for the Scots.
The Scots will face Carthage again on Mar. 23 as Macalester hosts four conference foes Mar. 23-24 at Riley Pool.
