ROGERS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season this afternoon, as the Scots played Grinnell in a non-conference matchup. Macalester fell 7-2 and are now 1-1. Grinnell improves to 8-0.
The Scots earned both their points in singles matches. Slated at No. 1 singles, senior
Sydney Ellison (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park) won a hard fought three set match. The first set she won 7-6 with a 7-2 tiebreaker. Ellison fell in the second set, 7-5 but took the third 1-0 (11-9). The Scots' other point came at No. 5 singles. Sophomore
Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) also won in three sets. 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (13-11). The Pioneers took the points at second, third, fourth, and sixth singles.
Macalester played all three doubles matches close. Ellison and sophomore
Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) at No. 1 doubles, and seniors
Amanye Reynolds (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) and
Meg Ulrich (Carlisle, PA./Carlisle) at No. 2 doubles fell 8-5. While at No. 3 doubles, Haugen and sophomore
Sedona Crosby (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) fell 8-6.
Macalester's next match will be Saturday Feb 24. The Scots play Luther at 5:30 p.m. at Rochester Tennis Connection in Rochester, Minn.
