ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team is ranked fourth in the latest Region IX rankings, the United Soccer Coaches announced today. The Scots, who have been ranked third in the region all season, dropped one spot after a 1-1 week.
On Wednesday, Macalester outshot then-No. 4 Gustavus, 11-5 but lost, 1-0 in a game that started on Saturday but was suspended due to lightning. The defeat was just the second of the season for the Scots (8-2), who had a six-game winning streak prior to the loss. Macalester bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Concordia at home on Saturday. Sophomore forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) tallied a goal and an assist, while senior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the win. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) made one save, as the Scots held a 24-3 advantage in shots for the game.
Gustavus remains the top team in the region, with the Gusties moving to No. 3 in the national poll. The other MIAC teams ranked in the region, along with Macalester and Gustavus, are St. Olaf (third), Augsburg (seventh) and Hamline (receiving votes).
This week the Scots play at Bethel on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. before hosting St. Olaf, the defending national champions, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
