ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College junior guard
Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) was named to the five-player D3hoops.com Men's Basketball Team of the Week, the website announced today. Yesterday Williams was recognized as the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week after his 51-point performance at Concordia on Wednesday.
The D3hoops.com Team of the Week honors NCAA Division III men's and women's basketball players at each of the five positions for their performances from the previous week. This is the 27th season the website has named a Team of the Week.
Williams is the first Macalester men's basketball player to be named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week since
Kareem Ismail '17 and
Michael Gutierrez made the team on back-to-back weeks in January of 2017. Current head coach
Abe Woldeslassie '08 made the Team of the Week in January of 2007, while
Doug Benson '02,
Patrick Russell '03 and
Ben Van Thorre '04 (twice) have also received the honor.
In a 92-88 victory over the Cobbers in Moorhead, Minn., Williams registered 51 points on 20-of-28 shooting from the field, which is a blazing 71.4 percent. The performance marks the most points scored in a MIAC game in the program's history and ranks behind only Augsburg's Devean George's 52 points as the most points ever scored in a MIAC game. The school record for all games is believed to be 53 points by
Bobby Aguirre '95 against Division I George Mason on Nov. 29, 1994.
On Saturday Williams contributed 20 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 76-59 loss at home to league-leading Saint John's. For the week he averaged 35.5 points per game while shooting 58.0 percent from the field over the two games.
The Scots will host Bethel University on Wednesday, Jan. 31, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
