Men’s Basketball: Macalester to Play Minnesota in Exhibition Game Nov. 2

| By:
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team will play the University of Minnesota at historic Williams Arena in an exhibition game on Nov. 2. Game time and broadcast information have yet to be announced.

"What an amazing honor for our men's basketball program to have the opportunity to represent Macalester College," head coach Abe Woldeslassie '08 said. "To play the Gophers in Williams Arena is so cool and our players and coaches look forward to that day."

This is not the first time the Scots and Gophers have met in men's basketball, although it has been over 100 years since the last contest. Macalester and Minnesota played 11 times from 1896 to 1922, with the Scots winning the last meeting, 12-11 on Dec. 16, 1922 at the University Armory. Macalester won four of those 11 games, including a home game on Feb. 1, 1899.

Williams Arena, home of the Gophers since 1928, is the seventh-oldest active college basketball arena in the country. Nicknamed "The Barn," it features a raised court and has a capacity of 14,625. Longtime Macalester men's basketball, track and cross country coach Doug Bolstorff played for the Gophers in Williams Arena in the 1950s, and Macalester M Club Director Dean Verdoes '64 won the 1960 Minnesota state boys basketball tournament as a member of tiny Edgerton High School on the Williams Arena court.

Minnesota hosted St. Olaf of the MIAC in an exhibition last season, with the Gophers winning, 71-55.

Last season Macalester was 15-11 and qualified for the MIAC Playoffs for the second year in a row. The Scots feature All-MIAC and All-Region junior guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose), who has scored 1,066 points in just 55 career games at Macalester.
