ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team came back to Nicholson Field this afternoon to take on the Saint John's Johnnies. The Scots were able to complete the comeback in game one, winning 3-2, but fell 15-5 in game two. The Scots are now 15-13 (7-7 MIAC).
The Johnnies took a quick 2-0 lead to kick off the game. The Scots battled back and hold the Johnnies. Pitcher sophomore
Ben Levinson (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and the Scots' defense had back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the second and third. In the bottom of the fourth, the Scots cut the Johnnies lead in half. Sophomore
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led off with a single and then had first year
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) come in to pinch run. McCaskey advanced to second on a ground out and then came home on an RBI single from fellow first year
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill). With the game on the line in the bottom of the seventh, Macalester stepped up to the challenge. Senior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) opened the inning with a walk. Then sophomore
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) hit a double to put runners on second and third. Senior
Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) came in to pinch run for the Scots for Waddell. Junior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) was intentionally walked to load the bases, sending fellow junior
Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) to the plate. Burton came up big for the Scots hitting a walk off 2-RBI single into right field, scoring Margolis and Hager to win game one, 3-2. Levinson pitched a complete game to get the win on the mound.
The Scots started game two strong, with a run in the first. Mukai doubled to left field to score Margolis. However, the Johnnies came back with six runs in the second and three in the third. Mukai hit a second RBI double to score Margolis in the bottom of the third, and an RBI double from first year
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to score junior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) in the fifth closed the gap to 9-3. However, Saint John's had another six-run inning in the sixth to increase their lead. The Scots continued to fight in the seventh, Hager registered an RBI to bring in McCaskey. Then first year
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) hit an RBI single to bring home fellow first year
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville), but the Scots' fight back was cut short, and Macalester fell 15-5. Margolis was 2-for-3 with two runs while Mukai was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Thursday April 27. The Scots will host St. Olaf at Nicholson Field with first pitch at 2:30 p.m.
