ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College water polo team overcame an early 4-1 deficit to defeat fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson, 14-7 in the quarterfinals of the CWPA Division III Tournament, held at Riley Pool. The Scots, seeded fifth, improve to 7-10 on the season and will face top-seeded Augustana College in the semifinals on Saturday. The Presidents (9-9) will play Utica in the consolation bracket.
First year
Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) tallied the first goal of the game early in the first quarter for a 1-0 lead. Washington & Jefferson responded by scoring the next four goals to lead 4-1 at the end of one quarter. Midway through the second quarter, senior
Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) found the net, followed by first year
Lorelei Bell (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) to make it a one-goal game, 4-3. After the Presidents scored a goal, Michaud's penalty shot sparked an 11-0 run over three quarters for a commanding 14-5 advantage. Nadolski scored four goals in the run, Bell, Michaud and sophomore
Brooke Lane (Meriden, Conn./Hopkins School) each scored twice and first year
Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) also tallied a goal. The Presidents registered a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to prevent the Scots from advancing.
First year goalkeeper
Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) made 12 saves in goal to preserve the win.
Before the match, the Scots honored its seniors Michaud,
Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and
Malia Borg (Charleston, S.C./Academic Magnet) as a part of the team's Senior Day.
Macalester will host Augustana College, 18-6 winners over ninth-seeded Carthage in the quarterfinals, on Saturday, April 22 at 12:40 p.m. at Riley Pool. The winner advances to Sunday's championship match at 1:30 p.m.
