Water Polo: Macalester Closes Regular Season with Split

| By:
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Macalester College water polo team ended the regular season with an 8-6 loss to Augustana College and a 3-2 victory over Wittenberg University in CWPA action Sunday at Carthage's Koenitzer Aquatic Center. The Scots are now 6-10 overall and 4-1 in the conference heading into the CWPA Tournament, which will be held at Macalester on April 21-23.

Against Augustana, the CWPA regular-season champion and the No. 7-ranked team in Division III, the Scots answered an early goal by the Vikings with three straight tallies by first years Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) and Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), and senior Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson). Augustana opened the third quarter with two goals to tie the score at 3-3. Michaud and Nadolski scored goals around an Augustana goal to make the score 5-4 Scots heading into the fourth quarter. The Vikings tallied four straight goals with under five minutes to play to take control of the match, 8-5. Michaud scored with 2:05 on the clock, but Macalester was unable to get any closer. First year Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) registered 11 saves in goal.

In the final match of four this weekend, Michaud opened the scoring in the first quarter to lead 1-0 against Wittenberg. The Tigers responded with two goals in the second quarter to take a 2-1 edge at halftime. Michaud found the net in the third quarter to tie the score at 2-2, then sophomore Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) notched the go-ahead goal with just 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. Kratt racked up 14 saves, including four in the fourth quarter, to preserve the win.

Macalester earned the No. 5 seed for the CWPA Division III Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson on Friday, April 21 at 4:00 p.m. at Riley Pool.
