ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College's Riley Pool will be the venue for this year's CWPA Division III Tournament, held April 21-23. The conference's 10 women's water polo teams will vie for the CWPA title as well as the two bids to the Division III Championship, which features the top two teams from the SWPA and the SCIAC. Macalester, seeded fifth, opens against fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
Macalester, coached by
Scott Reed, placed third in the CPWA West Division with a 4-4 record, losing twice each to Austin and Augustana (Ill.) and beating Wittenberg and Carthage two times apiece. Senior
Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) leads the Scots with 32 goals, 38 points and 38 steals. The two-time All-American also has won 14 sprints this season. Fellow senior
Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) has a team-best 18 assists to go with 14 steals, while sophomore
Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) has 14 assists. The goalkeeping duties have been shared this season by junior
Laurel O'Hare (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), who has 76 saves, and first year
Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn), who has 103 saves.
At last year's tournament the Scots beat host Grove City before losing to Austin in the semifinals and falling to Wittenberg in the third-place game. Augustana (Ill.) College is the top seed this year after losing to Austin in last year's CWPA Tournament championship game. Macalester had won the previous three contested CWPA Tournament titles from 2017-19. The last time the Scots hosted the CWPA Tournament at Riley Pool, Macalester came away with the championship in front of a raucous crowd.
The winner of the Macalester-Washington & Jefferson game will face either Augustana or the PSU-Behrend/Carthage winner on Friday at 12:40 p.m.
