Box Score 2 ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team faced Gustavus in a MIAC doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Gustie Softball Field, with the Scots losing Game 1, 7-6. The second game was suspended after the fifth inning due to darkness with the Gusties leading 5-3. The Scots are now 11-12 overall and 3-4 in the conference, while the Gusties are 10-13, 3-4 MIAC.
The second game will be completed at a later date to be determined.
Macalester opened the scoring in the first game with three runs in the top of the second inning. Senior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) hit a one-out double and later scored on a two-out single by junior
Cheyenne Woerman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego). After sophomore
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) walked, sophomore
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and junior
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give the Scots a 3-0 lead. Gustavus scored twice in the bottom of the second to make the score 3-2. In the top of the fourth, Morrical plated Futchko on a grounder for a 4-2 edge.
The Gusties broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the Scots answering with two runs in the sixth for a 6-5 lead. Morrical singled home Nicholson and senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) singled to score junior
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood). In the bottom of the sixth, Gustavus tallied two runs with two out to regain the lead, 7-6. Macalester threatened in the top of the seventh, with junior
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) doubling with one out. After a foul out, Futchko singled to left but the runner on second was thrown out at third to end the game.
Nicholson was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Katzin also had three hits and Morrical drove in three runs. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking five and fanning three in five innings.
In the second game, Pedersen singled to plate Church in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead. Gustavus put four runs on the scoreboard on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the second to lead 4-1. In the top of the third, Church singled to score Morrical, then Bergin came home on an error to make the score 4-3 Gusties. After Gustavus added a run in the bottom of the third, the game was halted at the end of the fifth inning due to darkness and incoming weather. Church had two of Macalester's seven hits through five innings.
