ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team had a field day this afternoon, posting five home runs between two games to sweep Saint Mary's 5-3 and 10-4. The Scots improve to 13-9 (5-3 MIAC).
In game one, senior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) scored the first run of the game off an RBI single from junior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) in the bottom of the first. At the bottom of the second, junior
Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) smashed his first home run of the day, and double the Scots' lead. The Cardinals answered in the third with two runs to tie the game. At the top of the fourth, Saint Mary's took a 3-2 lead, but in the bottom half of the inning Margolis hit an RBI single to bring home sophomore
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and tie the game at three. Burton clinched the game for the Scots in the sixth, hitting a second home run, and scoring himself and first year
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Sophomore
Cam Scholl (Belmont, Calif./Carlmont) came in to pitch in the fifth and denied the Cardinals any hits for the final three innings. Macalester took the game 5-3.
Game two began with a two RBI home run from Odom in the first inning. The Cardinals tied the game up with runs in the third and fourth inning. The Scots quickly regained the lead at the bottom of the fourth. Waddell hit a two RBI double, bringing home Odom and junior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon). Leading 4-2, the Scots put up four more runs in the sixth, starting with Burton's third home run of the day, which scored himself and Waddell. Margolis smashed an RBI double to bring in first year
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Odom's RBI single plated sophomore
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) to round out the sixth and lead 8-2. The Cardinals picked up a pair of runs in the seventh, but couldn't catch the Scots. Waddell hit one out of the park for a solo home run in the seventh and Alexander scored in the eighth, sealing a 10-4 victory for the Scots.
Burton totaled four hits, three of which were home runs. He accounted for five RBIs and three runs. Odom and Waddell were both 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs in game two. Sophomore
Ben Levinson (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) got the win on the mound in game two, pitching six innings and only allowing six hits. Senior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) pitched the last inning of game two, striking out three of four batters faced.
Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Monday April 17. The Scots will play Hamline for a MIAC doubleheader at CHS Field in St. Paul. Game one will begin at 2:30 p.m.
