TUCSON, Ariz. - Macalester baseball wrapped up competition in Tucson, Arizona today, splitting two games. The Scots fell 10-0 to Luther in the morning, and muscled past Concordia Wisconsin 19-11. Macalester finished the week 5-5, and is 6-6 on the whole season.
In game one, the Norse took the lead in the second and the Scots fell 10-0. Junior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) went 1-for-2 against the Norse.
Both teams had a field day in game two, combining for 30 runs. The Falcons went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first, but the Scots answered back in the top of the second. Senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) hit an RBI single to score first year
Tommy Ball (Wayne, Pa./The Shipley School). Then, first year
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) smashed a two RBI double to plate fellow first year
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Palma. Senior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) had an RBI double and sophomore
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) hit an RBI single to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the third, first year
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) sent one over the fence, for his first collegiate home run and two RBIs. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the third with four runs to tie the game at seven.
At the top of the fourth, the Scots loaded the bases early. First year
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Ma./Walt Whitman) brought home Waddell and Margolis to reclaim the lead, 9-7. Planko drove in another run with an RBI single. With bases loaded once again, first year
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) hit an RBI single. Next, Gumagay was walked with bases loaded, scoring another run. After the top of the fourth inning, Macalester led 12-7. Concordia Wisconsin put up another run, in the back half of the inning, but Macalester continued to build its lead.
Planko drove in two more runs to kick off the fifth inning. Paulsen then brought home Planko with an RBI single. In the sixth, the Falcons closed the gap to 15-11. The Scots were done scoring yet. In the seventh, Jones hit a sacrifice fly to score Alexander. Gumagay then singled to bring home Ball. In the eighth, Ball's RBI single scored fellow first year
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mantiou Springs) and Planko picked up another RBI, bringing home Mukai. The Scots won the game 19-11, ending the spring trip on a high note.
Macalester will head back to Minnesota for its next game. The Scots are scheduled to play on Saturday March 25 against Northwestern (MN), in St. Paul. The first game of the double header is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
