MAUSTON, Wis. – The Scots put on a show this afternoon, as the Macalester baseball team headed down to Mauston, Wis. to take on the Yellowjackets of University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Scots were able to defeat the Yellowjackets in both games this afternoon, 5-4 and 9-4. Macalester is now 8-6 this season.
After two scoreless innings in game one, junior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) hit an RBI single to bring home senior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) and take a 1-0 lead. Right after, junior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) smashed a three-run homer to lead 4-0. The Yellowjackets registered a run in the top of the fifth, but the Scots answered back immediately with a run of their own. Sophomore
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) cracked an RBI single up the middle to bring home Odom. University of Wisconsin-Superior tried to make a comeback in the sixth, scoring three runs, the Scots held on for the 5-4 victory. Senior
Peter Aspholm (Winthrop, Wash./Liberty Bell) pitched three innings, not allowing a hit.
In game two, Macalester came out hot with two runs in the first. Junior
Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) hit a two RBI single, that brought home Mukai and sophomore
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet). The Scots built on their lead in the second, scoring seven runs. First years
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Green Farms),
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) scored due to Yellowjacket errors. Then Mukai tripled to bring home Waddell, to lead 6-0. Sophomore
Evan Burns (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) smashed an RBI double to bring home Mukai. Burton then plated Burns with an RBI single. The Scots then loaded the bases, and Gumagay was walked, which brought Burton home, and the Scots led 9-0. The Yellowjackets would score four runs in the remaining innings, but Macalester was too much to handle. The Scots won 9-4.
Macalester's next doubleheader will be Saturday April 1. The Scots begin conference play at Bethel. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
