PASADENA, Calif. – The Macalester College water polo team played its second match in California this week, losing to Caltech, 11-10 Monday evening at Braun Pool. The Scots are now 1-5 this season, while the Beavers improve to 3-6.

Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) opened the scoring with a goal at the 5:18 mark of the first quarter. After Caltech tied the score, first year
Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) found the net before the end of the first quarter for a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, senior
Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) scored to put the Scots up 3-1. Back-to-back goals just 30 seconds apart tied the score for the Beavers. Nadolski briefly gave the lead back to Macalester with her second goal of the game, but Caltech closed out the quarter with four consecutive goals for a 6-4 halftime advantage.
After the Beavers scored to open the third quarter, Palmer-Sammons notched her second goal of the match followed by a goal from senior
Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) that made the score 7-6 Caltech. Palmer-Sammons answered another Beavers' goal with one of her own before the end of the third quarter, as Caltech took an 8-7 edge into the final quarter. Michaud opened the period with a goal on a long shot to tie the score at 8-8. Palmer-Sammons scored on a penalty shot to give Macalester its first lead of the match since the second quarter, 9-8. Following a Beavers' goal that tied the score at 9-9, Michaud put the Scots up again with her third tally. Again Caltech knotted the game at 10-10, then scored the go-ahead goal with 1:14 remaining. The Beavers blocked a shot on Macalester's next possession, then ran out the clock to clinch the win.
Junior goalkeeper
Laurel O'Hare (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) made nine saves for the Scots, while Michaud and Hollingsworth each had two steals.
Macalester closes out its California trip with matches against Saint Francis University and La Verne on Tuesday, Mar. 14.
