TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team played its third game down in Tucson this morning. The game was close until the bottom of the fifth, when Macalester lit up to take the lead. Macalester won 14-4 in seven innings. The Scots are now 2-3.
The Scots were down 2-0 after the first two innings. However, Macalester took the lead in the third. Senior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) hit an RBI single up the middle to score first year
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms). Junior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) then hit a sacrifice fly to bring home senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman). Margolis then scored off an RBI single from first year
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), to lead 3-2.
The Lobos regained the lead in the top of the fifth, 4-3, but from then on it was all Macalester. Margolis scored his second run of the game, to tie the game at four, with an RBI from sophomore
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet). Alexander then smashed a two RBI double, plating Mukai and junior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). First year
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) closed out the fifth with an RBI single, plating Alexander, to lead 7-4. In the sixth, Mukai and Waddell hit back-to-back RBI singles to go up 9-4. Macalester continued to increase its lead in the seventh, Gumagay scored after the Lobos walked the Scots with bases loaded. Margolis had an RBI single to bring in first year
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mantiou Springs). Odom then smashed the ball down the third base line to score Palma and senior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School). Mukai's sacrifice fly in the seventh closed out the game for the Scots. Macalester defeated Sul Ross State 14-4.
Margolis was 2-for-3, with four runs and two RBI's. Alexander was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI's. The Scots totaled 11 hits in the game.
Macalester's next game will be Monday March 13. The Scots will play Carthage at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. MST/2:30 p.m. CDT.
