Water Polo: Scots Split Two Games at Macalester invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College water polo team continued play at the Macalester Invitational, losing to McKendree University, 14-9 before defeating Caltech, 9-3 Saturday at Riley Pool. The Scots are now 1-2 on the season.

Against McKendree, Macalester received first-half goals from senior Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson), who scored twice, senior Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), sophomore Kendall Coney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) and first year Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock), as the first half ended with the score tied at 5-5. McKendree reeled off seven goals in the third quarter, with the Scots managing just one goal by Strauss to trail, 12-6 heading to the final quarter. Hollingsworth opened the fourth quarter with a goal, but McKendree scored twice and kept the Scots off the scoreboard the rest of the way to close out a 14-7 win.

Macalester tightened up the defense in the match against Caltech, allowing only three goals in a 9-3 victory. First year Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and Hollingsworth scored goals in the first quarter, which ended with the teams tied at 2-2. The Scots tallied four unanswered goals in the second quarter, with first year Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) scoring twice and Hollingsworth and Palmer-Sammons scoring one goal apiece. After Caltech opened the third quarter with a goal, Nadolski, Strauss and sophomore Brooke Lane (Meriden, Conn./Hopkins School) each scored to give Macalester its first win of the season, 9-3.

Macalester wraps up play at the Macalester Invitational with a game against Ottawa University Arizona on Sunday Feb. 19 at 3:15 p.m. at Riley Pool.
