Volleyball: Scots Beat UM-Morris, Luther on Final Day of Macalester Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team wrapped up their invitational tournament with victories over Minnesota Morris and Luther Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The two wins even the Scots' record at the tournament and improve their overall record to 3-2 on the season.

In the morning match against UM-Morris, Macalester broke open a tight first set with an 11-5 run to close out the win, 25-18. The second set was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than five. The Cougars had set point at 24-23, but kills by first year first year Grace Watkins (San Angelo, Texas/Georgetown) and sophomores Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) gave Macalester a 26-24 victory and a 2-0 lead. Preston and senior Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) each had five kills in the set. The Scots jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the third set and withstood a late charge by UM-Morris to complete the sweep with a 25-18 win. Watkins and Geber each had four kills in the final set.

Preston led all players with 10 kills. Watkins finished with nine kills, while King and Geber registered seven kills apiece. Sophomore Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) had 32 assists and nine digs. King paced the defense with 19 digs, with first year Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe West) tallied five blocks.

Against Luther, Preston helped the Scots win the first set, 25-18 with five kills. Luther came back in the second set, holding Macalester to seven kills in a 25-14 win. In the third set, King took over, registering nine kills without an error in 13 attempts (.692) to lead the Scots to a 25-19 victory. A key 8-2 run in the fourth set turned a two-point lead into a 20-11 advantage, and Macalester finished strong en route to a match-clinching 25-16 win.

King ended up with 15 kills and 22 digs to lead the Scots in both categories. Preston had 12 kills, while Geber contributed seven kills and four blocks. Norton dished out 34 assists and 13 digs, and sophomore Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) added 14 digs. Williams was the lone Scot named to the All-Tournament Team.

Macalester plays a non-conference match at Martin Luther on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The first serve goes up at 7:00 p.m. in New Ulm, Minn.
