St. Paul, Minn. – Due to cold weather up in Duluth, the Macalester Baseball team's doubleheader against St. Scholastica was moved to Nicholson Field this afternoon. After a late Scots rally was stopped short, 9-8, in game one, Macalester came back to win game two, 3-1. The Scots are now 10-19 (6-10 MIAC). St. Scholastica moves to 10-14 (5-7 MIAC).
Â
The Scots started out slow in game one, going down 8-0 in the first four innings. The Scots would battle back however. After back-to-back singles for the Scots in the fifth, seniorÂ
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) doubled to left field to bring home fellow seniorÂ
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman). Then, sophomoreÂ
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) hit an RBI single to plate seniorÂ
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage). Moreno would cross home plate on the same play after an error by the Saints, closing the lead to 8-3. St. Scholastica put up one run in the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh, the Scots continued to fight, putting up five runs. Macalester hit back-to-back RBI singles, cutting the lead to 9-5. Then seniorÂ
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) doubled to bring home Mukai. First yearÂ
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) brought home two more Macalester runs with a two RBI single. However, the Saints' lone run in the bottom of the fifth remained the difference, and the Scots' late rally was cut short, falling 9-8.
Â
In game two, Mukai blasted a two-run homer at the top of the fourth, scoring himself and fellow sophomoreÂ
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis), and went up 2-0. Rodriguez would add to the Scots' runs, hitting an RBI single, plating Moreno. Though St. Scholastica put up a run in the ninth, the Scots held on for the 3-1 win. Senior pitcherÂ
Will Moscato (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) pitched 6.1 innings, limiting the Saints to three hits, no runs, and four strikeouts. JuniorÂ
Declan Elias (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius) came in to relieve Moscato for the final 2.2 innings, striking out five batters and only allowing three hits, to get the save.
Â
Mukai had three hits on the day, with 4 RBI's and two runs. Odom had four hits on the day, scoring twice.
Â
The Scots' next doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday April 30. The Scots will host Concordia at 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for a MIAC matchup.
