St. Paul, Minn. – Macalester baseball hosted a doubleheader against MIAC opponent Concordia College. The Scots held off the Cobbers in game one, but fell in game two. Macalester moves to 11-20 (7-11 MIAC) while Concordia is now 11-10 (6-6 MIAC).
The Scots started game one strong with three runs in the first inning. Junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) was walked in with a bases loaded situation, bringing home senior
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Then, senior
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) hit a two RBI single bringing home sophomores
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) and
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) for a 3-0 lead. The Cobbers put up one in the top half of the third, but the Scots answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. Odom was able to reach home off a Cobbers throw. Immediately following, Helton singled to the left side and brought home Mukai to increase the lead to 5-1. Concordia hit a three-run homer in the fifth, but the Scots' junior pitcher
Declan Elias (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius) was able to hold Concordia to one hit for the last 2.2 innings and maintain the 5-4 victory.
Mukai went 2-for-3 in game one, scoring twice. Helton also went 2-for-3 with three RBI's.
In game two, the Cobbers were the first to score with three runs in the first. Macalester answered quickly, putting up three runs in the second. Senior
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) hit an RBI double to bring home first year
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Right after, Moreno hit a single to the outfield to score senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and Lincoln, tying the game at three. Both teams scored one run in the third to keep the game tied, 4-4. In the fourth, the Scots took a 5-4 lead with Helton hitting an RBI single. However, the Cobbers would fight back and score six more runs in the game to win game two 10-5.
Moreno went 3-for-4 in game two, scoring a run and driving two in. Palma went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Today, the Scots honored its senior athletes Moreno, Lincoln, Helton,
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson),
Will Moscato (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley),
Anushka Fernando (Silver Spring, MD./Wheaton), and
Louis Silverman (New York City, N.Y./Bronx HS of Science). The Scots return 31 to the diamond next year.
The Scots will close out conference play in the regular season on Tuesday May 3. Macalester will host Hamline for a double header at 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
