Northfield, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team traveled to Northfield today for its MIAC doubleheader against St. Olaf. Macalester battled hard, but fell in both games to the Oles. The Scots are now 8-15 (4-6 MIAC) and St. Olaf improves to 10-11 (4-5 MIAC).
After starting the game going down six, the Scots began to rally. In the fourth, the Scots cut the lead to four, as first year
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) hit his second home run of the season, scoring himself and sophomore
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon). Macalester then made the score 6-3 in the sixth. After a few Ole errors, first year
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) rounded the bases. Senior
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) came home in the top of the seventh, when the St. Olaf pitcher registered a balk with bases loaded. However, the Scots' rally fell short, and the Oles took game one 6-4.
Macalester started on the backfoot in game two, going down 4-0 in the second inning. At the top of the third, Mukai hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home fellow sophomore
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis), to cut the Oles' lead to three. However, St. Olaf answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs, to take a 7-1 lead. The Scots cut the lead to three again in the next two innings. In the fourth, senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) hit Macalester's second sacrifice fly of the game, scoring Waddell. Macalester scored two more runs in the top of the fifth. St. Olaf came back with five runs, in the next two innings, to take a 12-4 lead into the seventh. After back-to-back hits by the Scots, senior
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) doubled to bring home Mukai and Odom and make it 12-6. Four more runs would cross the plate for St. Olaf and the Scots were defeated 16-6.
Odom went 2-for-3 in game two, scoring three runs and hitting a triple. Mukai also went 2-for-3 in game two, hitting a double, an RBI, and scored a run of his own. In game one, Waddell went 1-for-2 hitting a two-run homer.
The Scots' next game is scheduled for Saturday April 23. Macalester will travel to Collegeville for a MIAC doubleheader against Saint John's. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and game two at 3:30 p.m.
