CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team picked up its first win in Florida with a 3-1 victory over Minn. Morris at THE Spring Games Tuesday morning at Hancock Recreation Complex. The Scots, who lost to UW-Stout 7-1 in the second game of the day, are now 3-9 on the season.
After spotting Minn. Morris a run in the top of the first inning, Macalester pulled even with an RBI double by sophomore
Lauren Smith (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) that plated sophomore
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon). Then in the fourth inning, the Scots put runners on second and third with one out. Smith's bunt allowed junior
Joia Simonson (Pardeeville, Wis./Portage) to score from third, then a throw drawn by Smith at second plated Morrical for a 3-1 lead. First year pitcher
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) did the rest, holding the Cougars to a hit and a walk over the final three innings to wrap up the win.
Pistorius allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out two over seven innings for her first win as a collegian. Smith, Simonson and Morrical each had two hits for Macalester.
Against UW-Stout, junior
Regan Brodine (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout. Senior
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) followed with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Brodine for a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the second and another in the fifth while keeping the Scots off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Brodine went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the offense, and pitcher
Elsa Church (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) held UW-Stout to two hits and a run over the final four innings.
Macalester continues play at THE Spring Games on Thursday, Mar. 17 against Kalamazoo and Curry beginning at 1:45 p.m. Eastern.
