CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team defeated Curry, 3-2 and lost to Kalamazoo, 6-5 at THE Spring Games Thursday afternoon at Legends Way Ballfields. The Scots are now 4-10 on the season with two more games left to play in Florida.
In the day's first game, Macalester scored twice in the top of the second inning to take an early lead over Kalamazoo. Sophomore
Lauren Smith (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) led off with a double, then sophomore
Emily Pedersen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) hit a two-out triple to plate Smith. First year
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) followed with a single to bring home Pederson for a 2-0 lead. Kalamazoo answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to lead, 3-2. In the top of the third, sophomore
Mandy Morrical (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) singled home senior
Mackenzie Clarke (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia), and senior
Anna Leidner (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) scored on a wild pitch to regain the lead for the Scots, 4-3.
In the top of the fourth, Clarke hit a two-out double and junior
Jessica Katzin (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) singled Clarke home to extend the lead to 5-3. The score remained 5-3 until the bottom of the sixth, when Kalamazoo pushed three runs across on one hit, three walks and a sacrifice fly. The Scots were retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game. Nicholson and Smith each had two hits, while Clarke scored two runs in the loss.
Against Curry, first year
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led off the game with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Then in the second, Futchko walked, advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, then scored on a bunt by Katzin for a 2-0 lead. Curry scored a run in the top of the third. In the fourth with a runner on third and two out, Natalia Okleasky hit a long fly ball deep to left. Leidner went back and made an outstanding catch to keep the run from scoring. Curry ended up tying the score with a run in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior
Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by Futchko, went to third on a grounder by Katzin and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. First year pitcher
Kaitlyn Pistorius (Parker, Colo./Legend) retired the Colonels in order in the top of the seventh to wrap up the win. Pistorius limited Curry to two runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking two in a complete-game victory.
Macalester closes out its Florida trip with games against Hood and Knox on Friday, Mar. 18, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
