Tucson, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team played its first games of the season today down in Tucson, Ariz. The Scots faced two talented teams and fell to both Sul Ross State and University of Redlands. The Scots are 0-2 to start the spring season.
In the first game, the Scots faced off against Sul Ross State. Sul Ross got off to a strong 9-0 lead after the first five innings. Macalester was limited to just two hits in the game. Junior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) batted a single in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the fifth, junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) hit a triple to right field. Rodriguez's triple batted in Margolis to make the score 9-1. Sul Ross would score two more runs in the final two innings to take the game, 11-1.
In the second game, Macalester competed against the University of Redlands. After going down 7-0 in the first two innings, the Scots began to rally in the third. After first year
Evan Burns (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) was walked, fellow first year
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) hit a triple to send Burns home. First year
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) hit an RBI single for Waddell to score a run, making it 7-2. Then senior
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) and sophomore
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) each hit a single. With two outs, and bases loaded, first year
Caidan Moore (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) hit a two-run double to plate Wingard and Lincoln, to put the Scots within three, 7-4. In the fifth, sophomore
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) came in as a pinch hitter, and registered Macalester's first home run of the season, and closed the Bulldogs' lead to two. However, the Bulldogs would not give up their lead, scoring four more runs on the evening, beating the Scots 11-5.
Moore went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Lincoln and Mukai also registered two hits in game two.
The Scots' next game is Sunday March 13 at 3:30 p.m. CDT. Macalester will play Edgewood College.
