Tucson, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team played its third game of the spring season this afternoon. The Scots faced Edgewood College. The Scots battled the whole game, but ultimately fell 16-8. The Scots are now 0-3.
After giving up two runs in the first, the Scots made quick work of getting Edgewood's three batters out at the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, junior
Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) singled and advanced to third by double from first year
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet). Sophomore
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) batted in Margolis on a ground out. Senior
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Waddell and tie the score at two all. Junior
Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) brought the Scots to a 3-2 lead in the third, with a solo home run.
The Eagles fought back in the fourth, scoring seven runs against the Scots to go up 9-3. However, the Scots were not deterred and continued to battle. In the fifth, Palma hit a single and once again batted in Waddell to bring Macalester within five. Senior
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) grounded out to have Mukai come home. With Palma on third, senior
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) hit a ground-rule double to advance Palma home, making the score 9-6.
At the top of the sixth, the Eagles would hit a home run, scoring three runs. Another score in the inning kept the Eagles ahead 13-6. The Eagles would score three more times in the game, going into the bottom of the ninth with a 16-6 lead. First year
Caidan Moore (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) would score for the Scots after first year
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) reached second after an error by Edgewood. Junior
Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) would hit a double to bring home Murakami. The Eagles took the game 16-8.
Margolis went 3-for-5 scoring one run while Waddell went 2-for-4 scoring twice.
The Scots' next game is Monday March 14 at 11:00 a.m. CDT. Macalester will play Carthage College.
