ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the first time in the program's history, the Macalester College women's swimming and diving team defeated Carleton, 198-96 in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Riley Pool. The Scots, who hadn't defeated the Knights at the MIAC Championships or in a dual meet until Saturday, won 14 of the 16 events.
In dual-meet victories over Luther, Saint Benedict and Carleton this season, Macalester swimmers and divers have won 36 of the 42 events contested.
The Scots' 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore
Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), first year
Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), sophomore
Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and junior
Jocelyn Radke (Indianapolis, Ind.) started the meet with a win in 1:51.68.
First year
Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) earned three first-place finishes, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.21, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.16 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.67. First year
Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.), last week's MIAC Athlete of the Week for women's swimming, won both distance events, taking first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.30) and 1000-yard freestyle (11:08.17). First year
Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) also won two events, capturing the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.77 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.29.
Radke turned in a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (55.83) and a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (25.59). Pollock won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.04 and took second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:22.05. First year
Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) placed first in the 200 butterfly (2:20.34) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:40.04).
Others swimming well included sophomore
Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), who was second in the 100 freestyle (57.05) and 200 freestyle (2:04.90); Wray-Raabolle, who took second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.31) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:17.27); sophomore
Eleanor Petrin (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka), who placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.95) and third in the 200 butterfly (2:26.40); and sophomore
Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School), who finished third in the 50 freestyle (25.78).
In the diving events, senior
Katie Kelbrants (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South) won the 1-meter event with a score of 203.85, just ahead of sophomore
Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial), who scored 202.80 points. Yehle won on the 3-meter board, edging Kelbrants, 206.25 to 203.05.
The Scots closed out the meet with another relay victory, as the team of Henry, Merkadeau, sophomore
Anna Rakowski (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) and Radke won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.24.
Next up for Macalester is a dual meet at Hamline on Nov. 19.
